How Activated Carbon Is Manufactured

Activated carbon production is a carefully controlled process that transforms organic raw materials into a highly porous adsorbent. The manufacturing method directly determines the final product’s pore structure, surface area, and performance characteristics.

Raw Material Selection and Carbonization

Production begins with selecting a suitable carbon-rich precursor such as coconut shell, wood, peat, or coal. The raw material is first dried and then subjected to carbonization, a thermal decomposition process carried out at 400 to 600 degrees Celsius in the absence of oxygen. During carbonization, volatile compounds are driven off, leaving behind a carbon-rich char with a rudimentary pore structure. This char has limited adsorption ability on its own and requires further processing.

Activation Methods

Activation develops the extensive internal pore network that gives activated carbon its remarkable surface area. There are two primary methods. Steam activation exposes the carbonized material to steam at 800 to 1000 degrees Celsius, which selectively gasifies portions of the carbon to create pores. Chemical activation involves impregnating the raw material with an activating agent such as phosphoric acid or zinc chloride before heating at lower temperatures. Chemical activation often produces carbons with higher surface areas but requires thorough washing to remove residual chemicals.

Quality Control

After activation, the carbon is cooled, crushed or screened to the desired particle size, and subjected to quality testing. Key parameters include iodine number, surface area, moisture content, ash content, and hardness. Consistent manufacturing conditions are critical to producing carbon that meets specification requirements batch after batch.
