Activated Carbon Quality Testing Methods

Quality testing is essential for verifying that activated carbon meets the specifications required for its intended application. A range of standardized laboratory methods exists to characterize different aspects of carbon performance, and understanding these tests helps buyers make informed purchasing decisions.

Adsorption Performance Tests

The iodine number test is the most commonly referenced quality metric. It measures the carbon’s ability to adsorb iodine from solution and serves as an indicator of micropore content and overall surface area. Higher iodine numbers generally correlate with better performance for small-molecule adsorption. The methylene blue value measures adsorption of a larger dye molecule and reflects mesopore development. Together, these two tests provide a useful picture of the carbon’s pore size distribution. For gas-phase carbons, the CTC activity and butane activity tests evaluate vapor adsorption capacity.

Physical Property Tests

Moisture content testing ensures the carbon has been properly dried and that buyers are not paying for excess water weight. Ash content reveals the proportion of inorganic residue, which can affect pH and leach undesirable minerals into treated water. The ball-pan hardness number measures resistance to abrasion and breakdown, which is critical for carbons used in backwashed filter beds or pneumatic conveying systems. Apparent density and particle size distribution are also routinely measured.

Requesting Test Certificates

Always request a Certificate of Analysis from your supplier for each batch of activated carbon. Compare the reported values against your project specifications and historical data to identify any deviations before the carbon is loaded into service.
