Keep bags or containers sealed until use to prevent the carbon from adsorbing ambient vapors, odors, and moisture from the surrounding environment. Exposure to volatile organic compounds during storage can partially saturate the carbon and reduce its effective service life. Store carbon away from chemicals, fuels, and solvents. Palletized bags should be kept off the ground and protected from rain and flooding.
Safe Handling Procedures
When handling activated carbon, wear appropriate personal protective equipment including dust masks, safety glasses, and gloves. Fine carbon dust is a respiratory irritant and can create slippery surfaces on floors. In confined spaces, be aware that activated carbon can deplete oxygen levels by adsorbing oxygen from the air. Shelf Life Considerations
Unopened activated carbon stored under proper conditions can maintain its adsorption properties for several years. Once a container is opened, use the carbon promptly or reseal it tightly. Periodically inspect stored inventory and rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis to ensure consistent quality.
